About this Episode
' Twas the night before Christmas…What a perfect night to share about A Career Carol by Dr. Helmut Schuster and Dr. David Oxley. The concept is loosely based on A Christmas Carol, with ghosts and everything.
Part 1: A Career Carol
In this fable, the protagonist, Shey, faces the night before graduation with skepticism about conventional success narratives. The story unfolds through four ghostly visitations, each representing a potential career trap.
Failure to Launch: Shey confronts a future where doubt and fear lead to a stagnant life, blaming external factors. The lesson: Take ownership of your future; proactive participation is crucial.
Beware of Gilded Cages: Trapped in a job he hates due to materialistic choices, Shey learns that cumulative decisions shape one's path. A conscious and purposeful life helps avoid the gilded cage.
The Fallacy of Blind Faith: Sir Anthony Bark, the ghost of blind faith, warns against relying on blind faith. Continuous learning, skill-building, and proactive planning are essential for career longevity.
The Nightmare of Lost Purpose: In the final vision, Shey is materially successful but lonely, emphasizing the importance of moral choices and not losing sight of personal values.

When you write, write for your audience. Put your book out there before even publishing it. Rob Fitzpatrick and I had a wonderful deep dive conversation about his book called Write Useful Books as well as the Workshop Survival Guide. He explains his process of writing as a product. In order to write (build) a lasting product, it needs to go through several iterations. He is currently making over $25k per month just on a few of the books he has published and in this video, he explains his process so you can too.
That's why I loved chatting with Rob about his books and his processes as a writer. He makes the process seem doable because he has broken it down into easily processed chunks. I highly recommend watching this video and checking out his books.

Mark W Schaefer is a master at marketing and human connection. The two go hand-in-hand. Marketing is nothing without human connection and he drives this point hard in most of his books. The first book of his that I read and discussed with him is Cumulative Advantage and the second one was Marketing Rebellion.

Half memoir and half self-help book, Jim Rees takes you on an adventure through his Race Across America (RAAM). Doing the race three times at over 3,000 miles of nonstop cycling as a solo rider ought to teach you something plus more about perseverance and strength. As Jim states in his book, RAAM is more about having a strong mindset than it is about being physically in shape, although both are still important. If you love physical endurance racing such as running, cycling, or swimming, then I think you will relate to Jim’s story.

It's a book for everyone who is dying to be productive but don't want to lose their humanity.⠀⠀The book is all about connecting, creating, and finding flow. When you are able to do all three of these, you will be the most productive and most human you could ever be.⠀⠀2️⃣It's filled with research, many great stories from people such as Theodore Roosevelt and the crew of The Endurance. ⠀⠀3️⃣Corey put his heart into this book and it shows through the words he writes. It's written to help you change your perspective about what productivity is and how you don't have to work 100 hours a week to get what you want. The practical lessons are plenty. ⠀⠀MY FAVORITE STORY⠀You've got stories of James Cameron. Sometimes your childhood dream, your goal, the thing you want to come into reality has to wait until the time is right, just like James Cameron did for Avatar. The story idea is something he had in his mind since he was a little kid, but he could not bring it into reality until 2009 when the technology was good enough to put it on the big screen. ⠀⠀The point being that sometimes you have to wait, let the idea simmer in your mind, until the right time in order to make your goals a reality.⠀⠀I highly recommend reading Productivity is for Robots by Corey McComb now.⠀
